Lankhorst takes Heavy Lift Slings Testing to the Next Level

Heavy lift projects are getting bigger and heavier. Lankhorst ultra heavy lift slings with capacities of 8,750 mT are becoming the norm, while slings with capacities up to 15,000 mT can be expected.

Increasing sling capacity is one thing, but the ability to test slings at this level can be a bigger challenge without the resources that Lankhorst can call on. A recent offshore wind project involved a total of 18 Lankoforce HL slings, 24 Lankoforce HL grommets, 7 Gama98 grommets and 4 Gama98 ultra heavy lift slings, lifting capacities ranging from 90.5 mT up to 1867 mT.

“The diversity and capacity of slings demonstrate Lankhorst's ability to provide tailored lifting solutions for offshore wind projects,” says Marcel van der Molen, Sales Director, Lankhorst Ropes. “It reflects the confidence that offshore heavy lift contractors have in the way they can use fiber rope slings to optimize crane capacity when installing monopiles, transition pieces, including blades and nacelles.

“The number of slings and their range of lifting capacities from 108 mT up to 1,867 mT meant that Lankhorst had to manage simultaneous testing at multiple test sites in the Netherlands, as well as, testing in Norway and the United States to ensure on-time delivery offshore. “We had a 4-month window to manufacture and test the slings which called for an unprecedented level of project planning,” notes Marcel van der Molen.
