30 March 2010 ITS Convention, Vancouver 2010 Stronger and Safer Rope for Tug and Salvage Boat Operators Leading rope manufacturer, Lankhorst Ropes is announcing a breakthrough in tug boat rope splicing at ITS 2010, Booth 10. Called A3, the splice has a 100% efficiency, and so there is no loss in rope strength due to splicing. It also makes rope handling easier as there is no doubling of the rope or splice stiffness in the mainline. Moreover, the A3 splice design is less prone to the effect of abrasion on vulnerable areas of the splice covering, thus providing a longer lasting rope. Launching the A3 rope splice, Steven Wardenier, commercial director, Lankhorst Ropes commented, “This is an important development for tug and salvage boat operators. The new splice enables a stronger rope that provides greater safety in rope handling, and offers significant savings in the overall cost of rope ownership for tug and salvage boat owners.” The A3 splice will be progressively introduced across the Lankhorst Ropes range over 2010. Rope longitudinal marking reduce twists in tow rope The Lankhorst Ropes booth will also include ropes showing the company's innovative rope longitudinal marking system to help reduce twists in tow rope. Twists in towing lines can significantly reduce the useful life of the rope. In a twisted rope the load is unevenly spread over the braided strands, leading to damage to the rope's load bearing strands. As it is not always easy to tell if the tow rope has twisted over time, Lankhorst is now printing a longitudinal marker on the outer jacket of its Strongline rope, as a marker either for the Master or the crew to identify twists which can then be taken out of the rope. In this way Lankhorst is increasing the operational life of the rope, as well as safety on deck. For more information contact Lankhorst Ropes on +31 (0)515 487654, and email info@lankhorstropes.com.
